Advice for seekers

Posted: September 9, 2009 by Daniel in apologetics, Christianity

city_landscapeThe great things you propose to do, these works of yours, what comparison do they bear to the blessing which you hope to obtain? I suppose by these works you hope to obtain the favour of God and procure a place in heaven. What is it, then you propose to offer? What could you bring to God? Would you bring him rivers of oil, or the fat of ten thousand animals? Count up all the treasures that lie beneath the surface of the earth; if you brought them all, what would they be to God? If you could pile up all the gold reaching from the depths of the earth to the highest heavens, what would it be to him? How could all this enrich his coffers or buy your salvation? Can he be affected by anything you do to augment the sum of his happiness, or to increase the glory of his kingdom? If he were hungry he would not tell you. “The cattle upon ten thousand hills are mine,” he says (Psa 50:10). Your goodness may please your fellow-creatures, and your charity may make them grateful, but will God owe anything to you for your gifts, or be in debt to you for your influence? Absurd questions! When you have done everything, what will you be but a poor, unworthy, unprofitable servant? You will not have done what you ought, much less will there be any balance in your favour to make atonement for sin, or to purchase for you an inheritance in the realms of light.

Be blessed and prosper

It is a hard thing to shift from enjoying the prosperity gospel, living it out and feeling that it works because you are well off – to changing your mind about it and discovering what the gospel is truly about. Why is it so difficult to see? Because its connected to a unique world view and an approach to understanding scripture that blocks the prosperity gospel adherent from seeing error.

Perhaps a starting point if you think you might be into prosperity is for you to listen to your favorite preacher and ask yourself the question: “Is this message fundamentally about me or is it about God?” Prosperity teaching will be man centred but biblically faithful preaching will be about God. The bible is God’s revelation about himself to us. Good teaching nd preaching will extend this and help us access biblical truth about God. Sure we learn stuff about ourselves along the way (eg, that we are wretched sinners) or how to walk the Christian walk, but at its essence – what is the preacher about?

Now isn’t that a very common topic now days!
Lets open it up and see how that type of argument stands after some scrutiny.

  • Hasn’t science debunked the bible?
  • Isn’t it flawed?
  • Written my man?
  • Contradictory?

It may surprise you but YES. Science has debunked the bible many times over the years!
Only to have their “findings” changed by other people who have either more or better information or maybe less bias. Just as today we have an evolutionary world view that clashes with almost all the bible, from its account of creation to the point of existence itself.

People keep bringing up the points that always get brought up, eg: “The water turning to blood in Exodus was just an algae!
Earth being made in 6 days. You shall not eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. For in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die. Yet they did not die that same day! How can Jesus walk on the water?” On and on it can go.
So instead of getting bogged down in 10000 points of the Bible that non-believing people don’t want to understand. I would rather be offensive as opposed to defensive by letting what the Bible says very clearly speak for itself! The lovely gems as I call them, that the attackers have to explain away! So lets look at some bible Gems and let them shine this Christmas.
Ask yourself “If the bible is man made, how can the writers know something that no man could know by normal physical non-modern scientific means?”

Lets go to the oldest book in the bible Job. With a little Proverbs. Floating and rotating spherical earth… Job 26:7 He… hangs the earth upon nothing. Job 38:14 It [earth] is turned like clay under a seal… Pro 8:27 When He prepared the heavens, I was there; when He set a circle upon the face of the deep; How can a man, regardless how smart Job could have been, 3500+ years ago, know that the earth was a sphere and spin while hanging in nothing? We only worked that out 200 years ago, but even then, we only REALLY knew it once we went up in to space and looked back at the earth. Only two words are needed: divine revelation

Eve. Gen 3:20 The man Adam named his wife Eve because she would become the mother of all who live. The bible is very clear about all humans having 1 original birth mother: Eve. Today science has clearly discovered that there is mitochondrial DNA that only comes from the mother, passed on to the next generation, you me and the woman next door all have the same mitochondrial DNA that could only come from the previous woman, going all the way back to the First woman. EVE…
Pleiades and Orion.

Job 38:31 Can you bind the bands of the Pleiades, or loosen the cords of Orion? Can a man 3500+ years ago be expected just by looking up at the stars to know that Pleiades and Orion are constellations of stars that are different from all other stars around them, but also have intricate knowledge about them without even a telescope? We have only just discovered via our high technology that in ever so minuscule amounts all stars in the constellations that we see in the sky are spreading apart bit by bit. Yet out of all known constellations Pleiades is not moving apart at all [bound] and Orion is moving apart very fast [loosed], so much more than all other constellations that it will soon fall apart and no longer be a constellation in the future. Yet it cannot be detected by the human eye or normal observations. I have two words once again “divine revelation”! Anyway, why would 40+ men over a period of 1500 years on three different continents, in three different languages often never knowing each other, “make up” something that is so out of this world, over and over and end up getting it right every time?

There is not single fact in the bible that is incorrect, not one part can be proved to be wrong. Yes people have thought that parts were wrong, yet once “real” science caught up and used unbiased observations and thinking, the bible stands strong time and again. Think about it, if there were any “real” discrepancies in the bible, we would never hear the end of the detractors. The only reason why people today do not want to except the bible as TRUTH is because they don’t want it to be TRUTH. They are willingly blind to it. I think that there is a good verse covering that! If they can just push the bible to a small corner and reduce it to a “fable” then they can continue to justify their sinful lifestyles and will never bend the knee to God. So blessings this Christmas and all the best with reaching your family’s over this festive season!
From Scott.

And remember ”Human knowledge is ultimately man boasting about himself.” That is a hollow boast isn’t it!

The Twelve Days of Christmas

Hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas! To celebrate the Twelve Days of Christmas this year, the EA team will be attempting to bring you some evangelism support and training in the form of twelve common objections you might encounter while witnessing to someone and a possible answer you could give. They won’t be perfect, they might not even be great, but we’ll do our best. Hopefully by January 5th you’ll be feeling so much more confident that you can counter some objections that you’ll get out there and faithfully share the gospel throughout 2008!

Okay, so we’ve missed the first day, I know. We’ll catch up if you bear with us!

Here is the question of ultimate importance!

Who is Jesus?

Is he the promised one that He claims to be?

Is he the anointed One of God that has come to liberate those in spiritual bondage?

Is he the Son of God?

Or

is he just Joesph’s son?

Is he just a teacher with eloquent comforting words?

What I am about to say right how is very familiar to most of you…

We are travelling over very familiar territory right now….

And here is a sad fact of human nature. this is absolutely an effect of the fall…

“we get familiar with things”

In fact we get overly familiar with things”

so we get “used to things”

And as we get overly used to things they lose their “effect on us”

heart

I was listening to way of the master last week and was very taken by a section sent in by a listener to WOTMR, sent in this quote from “Hope Lutheran church – C F W Walter”

“There is a difference between the Law and the Gospel. All religions contain PART of the Law. Some of the heathen have advanced so far that they have even perceived the necessity to have a inner cleansing of the sole. Purification of thoughts and desires, but of the Gospel not a particle is found except in the Christian religion.
The Law is written in their hearts, Their consciences bearing witness to them, but not the Gospel, this is why we need to go to the ends of the world. Had the Law not been written in men’s hearts, no one would listen to the preaching of the law. Everyone would turn away and say “That is too cruel, no body can keep the commandments, such as these!”
But my friends do not hesitate to preach the Law, people may revile it but they only do so with there mouths, but what you say to them is the things that there conscience is preaching to them everyday! [Unless God has let them go, and that is a terrifying thought…] Nor could we convert any person by preaching to him unless we preach the law to him first. It would be imposable to convert any one if the Law had not been written in men’s hearts.”
